It is the biggest stable-value (SV) fund around and is guaranteed by the US Government. The guaranteed rate is determined monthly from the weighted average of the yields of Treasuries of 4+ years of maturities. Special Treasuries are issued for the G Fund that are rolled over daily by the Treasury Secretary. During the debt-ceiling impasses in DC, the Treasury Secretary suspends these daily rolls and that provides breathing room of triple-digit billions to the Government; the G Fund holders are not at risk as the daily rolls are restored in full after the debt-ceiling impasse is over (similar actions are also taken for other federal retirement systems such as Civil Service CSRDF and Postal Service PSRHBF).
Other SVs are issued and backed/guaranteed by insurance companies. Some of these may have higher guaranteed rates, e.g. TIAA Traditional (with several types - RA, SRA, RC, RCP, etc).
Edit/Add, 12/31/23. Beware that TSPFolio may post tentative rate for the new month early and may revise it later. This has been noted a few times the Site was checked for new month updates and it was noticed that the previous month rate was also revised. There must be some Treasury document where this information is posted monthly (i.e., the weighted average of the yields of Treasuries of 4+ years of maturities).
