FB PRIVACY & VISIBILITY. People put lot of information on Facebook (FB) & it is important to be aware of what is seen & by whom. Many FB users just use default settings for their FB PROFILES & that may be a mistake. This post is about 2 important high-level settings, FRIENDS & FOLLOW.
Under Settings/Privacy/Who can send you FRIEND requests? choices are Friends of Friends OR Everyone. Choose Friends of Friends if you don’t want to get random Friend requests (that you may decline anyway). Friends can see lot of information about you & your friends, so be wary of accepting strangers as Friends. Note that you only select your Friends, & your Friends select their own Friends, so your FB Friends of Friends can be a huge circle. Choose Public only if your FB Profile is business/organization related but then it may be better to create a FB Page.
Under Settings/Public Posts/Who can FOLLOW me? choices are Friends OR Public. If you make Public posts & want a broader audience to see those, choose Public; otherwise choose Friends. Note that FB-Follow has a very specific/limited meaning – it only means that your new Public posts will briefly flash on your Followers’ timelines/feeds & nothing more (so, it is an alert system). Also, if you restrict your new posts to some or all of your Friends, then your Public Followers won’t be alerted or see those.
There are many other FB Settings related to privacy & visibility that people should reviews too. FB PAGES have independent settings (LIKE, FOLLOW, etc) but considerations of privacy & visibility are quite different for Pages. #PersonalFinance 9/10/21.
